Pollard Stars in Mumbai Indians Win against Rajasthan Royals
Kieron Pollard’s all-round expertise and Lasith Malinga’s famed parsimony brought about a 27-run win for Mumbai Indians over Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede Stadium.
Chasing a daunting 198 to win, Rajasthan put up a spirited fight but lacked firepower to cross the finish line.
This was Royal’s first defeat of the season, and it came to be despite a blazing 76 by Owais Shah as the visiting side pursued in earnest the imposing 198 it was set by Mumbai.
Shah, who hammered five sixes and as many fours in his 42-ball knock, allianced for 92 runs in 57 balls with Ajinkya Rahane (40, 31b) for the third wicket, after skipper Rahul Dravid and Shreevats Goswami had exited to Munaf Patel off successive balls in the second over of the chase.
Earlier, MI had got off to a decent start through Richard Levi (29) and Rohit Sharma, who looked in sublime form with a well-made 13-ball 21, before both were snapped up by IPL debutant Brad Hogg with beautiful deliveries in successive overs.
Mumbai Indians, put in to bat by Royals skipper Rahul Dravid, made a quiet start before carting left arm spinner Chavan, who opened the attack, for 21 runs in the third over.
